Friday Favorites: The Month of May

It's Friday, it's Friday!  I'm doing my Friday happy dance over here.  It's probably a good thing that you can't actually see it.  Even though this was a short week, it definitely felt loooooong.  I'm happy Friday is here and the weekend is stretching out in front of me.

Since it is the end of May, for this edition of Friday Favorites, I thought I would do a May wrap up of a few things I have been loving all month long.

1). Perscriptives Super Line Preventor

I haven't been using this all month.  I've actually only used it a few times over the last 2 weeks, but wow am I impressed.  The lines on my forehead look a little softer already and my over all complexion seems to have improved.  A sample of this must have arrived in a Birchbox or Ipsy Box.  It's been sitting on the bathroom counter for a little while, and I decided to give it a try.

I will definitely be purchasing the full size version of this once I run out of a few other skin care products. (I'm trying to get better about using things up before buying something new.)

2). Target Threshold Geo Quilt

Ok so far I am 0-2 on things I have been loving all month long.  I actually picked this up YESTERDAY, but I looooooove love love love it!  A little over a year ago, I finally found a headboard and bedding that were perfect for our master bedroom.  I still love it.  BUT.  Our master bedroom is over our garage and it gets HOT HOT HOT in the summer months.  Seriously, I wear a sweatshirt downstairs because we crank the AC so high to get our bedroom to be a temperature we can tolerate.

So.  After sweating under the duvet, and then kicking it off and sleeping with a sheet, it was time to find something more light weight.  Enter the Target quilt.  It is the perfect summer weight for us!  Sleeping with just a sheet doesn't cut it in our household.  It's a fun pop of color for the summer months and after using it last night, I can state that it is PERFECT for summer sleeping.

 3).  The Trellis

I have seriously been wearing this necklace all month long.  To wedding showers, to work, with jeans and shorts, to evening events.  It goes with everything!

4).  Beer

Quite regularly, I take a step back from wine and enjoy a really good beer.  Spotted Cow is hands down my favorite.  Don't get too excited however, because you can only get it in Wisconsin.  And since we spent a good chunk of May driving to and from Wisconsin (shocking I know), we've had a decent supply at home. (May's Wisconsin adventures can be found here and here.)

On one of our weekend trips, a new discovery was made!  Skinny Dip (how cute for summer!).  It has creeped up the ranks this month and is now on the list of summer favorites.  Bonus - we can get it in IL.

5). Flamingo Phone Case from Zazzle

At the end of April, I was dying for a new phone case.  Something summery and fun.  I knew I wanted a flamingo on it (the Florida girl in me still comes out on occasion).  So I started on a hunt and came across this case on Zazzle.  (Which, btw, has SO many cute designs!)  This was right before Kate Spade and a few others launched all of their adorable flamingo cases and I'm still really happy with my purchase.

I got the Barely There case.  It's perfect for me because it protects my phone (yes I've dropped it), but doesn't add much bulk.  And it is really easy to find inside of my purse.

So there you have it!  I hope your May was fabulous and that you have a great weekend!

Summer Bucket List

With Memorial Day weekend come and gone, it is finally starting to feel like summer.  Maybe a little too much.  It's graduation night tonight and hundreds of people are going to be crammed in the gym at school and it's 86 degrees out.  #mothernaturefail

Summer always seems to fly by at warp speed.  I'm usually left scratching my head going, I know I wanted to get some things done...... In an attempt to make the most of summer, I thought a bucket list might help keep me focused on all of the fun (and not so fun) things I want to do this summer.

1). Take a Beach Vacation - I put this on there because we have one planned in June.  It's always nice to be able to put a check mark next to one thing.  It can't get here fast enough!  We almost never take vacations just the two of us (ok three of us because you know Buoy gets to come along!) and are very much looking forward to this one.

2).  Do More Hiking - There are so many neat trails up north that are so pretty, I want to explore more of them.  Clear the head, get some exercise and enjoy nature all at the same time.

3). Have More Bonfires - We have a fire pit in our backyard that has been used once and a pit at the lake that hasn't been used in years.  I love sitting around a bonfire with an adult beverage and s'mores.  This needs to happen more often this summer.

4).  Finish Spring Cleaning - Not everything on my bucket list is fun, but I will feel so much better when this project is done.  I knew some of Spring Cleaning was going to have to wait until summer.  I have a few more closets and the basement still to work on and then I can feel like our house is cleaned out and organized.  For a nano-second at least.

5).  Eat Outside More Often - We have a beautiful backyard and we need to enjoy it more!  The goal is to eat outside a few nights a week, when we can!

6).  Play Tennis - Both the hubby and I played tennis a lot when we were younger.  But I haven't touched a rack in probably 15+ years. We now have access to tennis courts and have decided that we need to get back into playing.  Which obviously means not only do I get to shop for a rack, but cute tennis clothes!  #winning #anyexcusetoshop

7).  Cook More Often - Whaaaat?  I know, right? I mentioned this last week but I genuinely would like to learn to enjoy cooking.  I think if I get more comfortable with it, I might not differ to the hubby all of the time.  He really likes cooking, but it's not fair for him to be 100% responsible for it.

8).  Read more - I am a pretty good reader.  I usually read a little (or a lot) before bed every night.  But I have a stack of books  that I can't read right before bed because they get my brain going.  Which is not the desired effect before heading off to dream land.  I have enough troubles getting my brain to shut off at night!  In another week, I start a very nice job perk of summer hours.  We got part-time for most of June and all of July.  It is glorious.  I am hoping to be found outside with a book at least a few afternoons a week.

So there you have it.  My Summer Bucket List.  Have you made one?  What is on yours?

Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Tuesday that still feels like a Monday, but it's one day closer to Friday.  So it's a win!.  As usual, a long weekend is too short.  But it was a lovely long weekend.  We headed up north to spend the weekend with family and friends, and to start working on getting the lake house summer ready.  After a 7 hour drive (have I mentioned I hate Chicago traffic?) we finally arrived, and had a drink.  Or 3.  Saturday morning, I woke up to this gorgeous view over coffee.

And then got ready for a wedding shower for a dear friend.  Saturday was the nicest day of the weekend, so we rushed back to the lake as soon as it was over.

You know summer has arrived when there is a Buoy on the back of the boat.

Saturday night was dinner with family.  This napkin pretty much sums up my lake family.  They are my kind of crazy.  Any weekend at the lake is the best because we can all be crazy together.

Sunday was kind of an eh day weather wise, so we started on a few projects like fertilizer and grass seed.  Fun right?  Apparently starting on Sunday, I forgot to take any pictures for the rest of the weekend.  Not that you really wanted to see a picture of me raking grass.  And our mulch project got put on the back burned because of rain.  (I know you were DYING to see those photos!)

The rest of the weekend was quiet.  Sunday night we went out for Italian.  It was yuuuummy as always.  And Monday was a quiet rainy day and we decided to hit the road earlier than we normally do.  We actually got home at a decent hour with enough time to unpack and get ready for the week to start.

Not a very exciting Memorial Day weekend, but it was exactly what I needed.  I can feel summer getting closer and I am so ready for it!  How was your Memorial Day weekend?

Friday Favorites: Memorial Day Weekend

High five! It's Friday!!!!

And I can't start off a Friday post with out letting you know about the fabulous Memorial Day sale going on at Stella & Dot right now.  An extra 25% off all sale items (new ones have been added and things are selling out fast, so run don't walk to the sale) AND it's an awesome time of year.  It's time for Dot Dollars!!!  What are Dot Dollars you might be asking?  For every $50 you spend now, you get $25 to spend later!  Saving money while you shop?  I call it a win!  That deserves wine.

And speaking of wine.....it's on my list of Friday Faves.  A must have staple for any Memorial Day weekend plans.  (Ok fine, you can insert a beverage of your choice.)

Memorial Day Weekend Favorites

A bottle of red?  A bottle of white?  Both are fine by me!  The temperature may determine your wine choice.  Where I'm going, it's a little all over the place, so best to be prepared with both.  One of my favorite reds is  Meomi Pinot Noir.  For white, I like a good Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.

Don't forget your sunglasses and something with sunscreen in it for your face.  This Revlon BB Cream is one of my favorites for summer.  I prefer a BB Cream the summer months because of the SPF and it just feels nice to wear a little bit less make-up.

A fun summery tote like this one from Lilly Pulitzer and few Stella & Dot accessories will compliment any Memorial Day weekend plans.

What are your Memorial Day weekend favorites?

Thursday Things - Liebster Award

About a hundred million year ago, or back in March, my new blogging friend Paige nominated me for the Liebster Award.  For those of you who don't know, the Liebster Award is given by bloggers for bloggers.  Thank you Paige for giving me the award!  Sorry it's taken me so long to respond!

The Liebster Award is a fun way to get to know and meet new bloggers.  Today, I'll be answering the questions Paige came up with for her nominees.

1. If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sushi.  Definitely sushi.  Or maybe stone crabs?  Mmmm....key lime pie......

2. Favorite nail polish color?

Mine definitely changes with the season.....Right now on my toes, I have Essie Bachelorette and Essie Ballet Slippers on my fingers.  And anything with a little shimmer to it is a-ok in my book!

3. Who would you most like to see in a concert front row?

This fall, we saw the opening night of the Garth Brooks tour.  It was AMAZING! Seeing it front row would have been even more amazing.  I love Garth.

4. Flats or Heels?

Flats.  Don't get me wrong, I love a good heal but the older I get, the more they hurt my feet.

5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Madison, WI. =)  Not a hard question for me to answer.  I'm desperate to live back there and be near all of my friends.

6. A good dinner out, or a new item for your closet?

It depends on how good the dinner is vs. what item for my closet.  I mean if we are talking Louis Vuitton vs. a good meal, then the new item in my closet, hands down!  Ok, who are we kidding.  It's almost always going to be a new item in my closet.

7. What is one movie you could watch countless times and never get tired of?

Ooooooo there are many.  For example on the plane ride home from Utah, I re-watched Because I Said So for the millionth time.  My hubby complains I re-watch Hallmark Christmas movies too often.  Pretty much if it's a chick flick, I can guarantee I've watched it countless times and am not sick of it.

8. Sweet or salty snacks?

Salty.  Then a little sweet to balance it out.

9. What is one skill or hobby you’ve always wanted to learn?

To cook well. And to enjoy it.  I really want to learn to like cooking.  And well, is more of a relative term.  I don't need to be a gourmet chef, just enjoying cooking and being able to make some nice, simple meals would be good enough for me.

10. How did you come up with your blog name?

A loooooot of trial and error and brain storming.  I like alliteration.  That much I knew.  And since I like wine (duh!) and often feel like life is always total chaos.....well there you have it.  I feel like it sums me up perfectly.

I now nominate:
1). Kelly at Shrinking Southern Yankee
2). Amanda at Kids and Cabernet
3). Chelsea at The Williams
4). Kylie at Dress in Sparkles
5). Joey at Hodges Podges

Here are the questions for my nominees:
1). Where is your favorite place you've ever traveled to?
2). Favorite nail polish color?
3). Chocolate or vanilla?
4). If you could relive any moment in your life, which would you choose?
5). Flats or Heels?
6). What is your favorite meal to cook at home?
7). Wine or Beer?  Or Cocktails?
8). New piece of jewelry or a new handbag?
9). What is one skill or hobby you’ve always wanted to learn?
10). How did you come up with your blog name?

Have fun!

A Spring Utah Weekend

Hello there Monday.  You don't seem quite as bad after a 3 day weekend.  Knowing it is almost Memorial Day weekend also helps.  Yay for two 3-day weekends in a row!  I like Mondays that don't require alarms.

As you may have seen last week, I was packing up my carry-on bag to head to Utah for a 3-Day weekend.  The hubby turned 30 so we went out there to celebrate and to shoot some photos.

Friday was the only (somewhat) decent day weather wise.  Mother nature did not want to cooperate and the majority of the photos the hubby needed to take were outdoor ones.  Epic Fail.  This is the view from our townhouse.

Here was the view the rest of the weekend.  It was rainy, cold and super cloudy.  Most of the weekend, you could barely see the mountains.

But we made the best of it!  Friday night we had a party to celebrate the hubby's birthday.  We are so fortunate to have made some amazing family friends in Utah.  They were all able to come over and celebrate with us.  We also met my parents out there, which always make our trips more special.  They threw a great party!

Saturday, the hubby got up early to take photos of the new fitness center and several of the classes that are being held there.  I slept in and checked it out much later in the day. ;-)

Gotta love a treadmill with a view!

Because it was rained all. day. long. the pups had a cozy day on the couch.

I rounded out Saturday afternoon with a massage, while the hubby went fishing, and then we went out for Mexican for dinner. Yum.  Sunday was spent having a lazy morning and then packing to head home.  Always sad.  It's never easy to leave, but it was even more difficult knowing we probably won't be back for awhile.  But never say never!  That is what I have learned about our travel schedule.  Until next time mountains.

How was your weekend?

Packing for a 3 Day Weekend In Utah

Let's get something clear right now.  I will (probably) never be one of those people who can travel for a month out of a carry on.  And some of the trips we like to take (aka winter ski vacations) will never allow for carry-on only travel.

Every once in awhile though, a trip presents itself and I think, yup!  Absolutely.  I can do this in a carry-on.  For the hubby's 30th birthday, we have decided to take such a trip. A 3 Day weekend in Utah.  We also don't travel like a normal people, however, which makes carrying on infinitely more challenging. We almost always travel with our dog.  This means I always lose out on a bag because he counts as either my personal item or carry-on item depending on the airline.

Totally worth it.  Look at that face.

I thought it might be helpful for some of your over-packers out there, to see that it possible to pack in a carry-on (and I really mean ONE bag) for a short weekend trip, even if you can't for slightly longer ones.  Here is what I am bringing:

Spring 3 Day Weekend In Utah

It's suppose to be raining and a bit on the chilly side over the weekend, so that definitely factors into what I pack.  I also know it is totally casual where we are going.

On the plane, I am wearing: black leggings, a graphic tee, a hoodie and sneakers.  My Longchamp tote tucks nicely into my carry-on suitcase so I will have a purse once we arrive.

I have one black cardigan packed and two different tank top options to wear underneath for evening/going out to dinner.  And a plaid button down top.  All of these could be worn with jeans or leggings and a pair of black ballet flats (which take up almost zero space).  I obviously went for a very neutral palette to make it easy to mix and match.  I'm bringing some fun jewelry (shocker I know) to jazz everything up.

I'm also bringing a light weight jacket that can double as a rain coat.  A pair of cropped yoga pants, a work out tank top or two and another hoodie means I have lots of options whether we are walking the dogs, doing a little shopping or exploring.

In case you are wondering, I've also got some layering tank tops, PJs, a bathing suit (for the hot tub), a long sleeved work out top and a few other items packed as well.  From a professional packer's point of view, I am definitely over packed.  But from where I am sitting, I have lots of options and I still fit in a carry-on bag.  So I'm calling it a win!

A Weekend of Weddings and Friends

Happy Monday!  Or is it?  Ok #reallife moment for a second.  It is grey and raining and all I want to do it curl up in bed and go back to sleep for the rest of the day.  And yes, I kind of feel like stomping my feet and whining a little bit about it.  Anyone else?  But, since this is real life, I'm going to put on my big girl panties, get another cup of coffee and get some work done.

The weekend started off nice and quiet.  Friday night we stayed home and did absolutely nothing.  It was lovely.  I did get a surprise bouquet of flowers, just because.  (The best reason!)

As I alluded to on Friday, this weekend was the start of our wedding season.  So Saturday we headed out of town to Lake Geneva, WI for a wedding.  We stayed at the Mill Creek Hotel, right downtown in Lake Geneva.  If you are in the Midwest, you definitely need to head to Lake Geneva for a weekend at some point and the Mill Creek Hotel has a great location.  It's a neat concept, because it's condos, but it is also a hotel.  We basically had a small apartment for the night.  There was even a nice outdoor space but it was cold and kind of rainy, so we didn't get a chance to use it.  I wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy it!

The wedding was an absolute blast and the bride was beautiful!  I was with some of my best friends in the world and we always have fun together.  I don't get to see them nearly enough, but we always make the most of it!

Sunday we slept in a little bit and stopped at the outlet mall on our way home.  We did surprisingly little damage, which isn't a bad thing.  I did not buy a single thing for myself.  <High Five!>  After a nap and snuggle session with Buoy, the rest of Sunday was pretty quiet.  Late night fun = a very slow moving Katie for several days.  Whoops!  It was totally worth it though to get to spend so much time with the friends I love.

So here's to a week filled with lots of coffee!  I hope you had a great weekend!

Friday Favorites: Wedding Make-Up

It is that time of year!  Wedding season is upon us.  We are actually starting to slow down a bit in that department.  Only two this summer, which I'm not going to complain about.  We couldn't be happier for those we know getting married, but it is nice not to have back to back to back weddings all summer long.

Getting ready for wedding used to be turn-key.  There were so many, it was almost auto-pilot getting ready for them. But I'm feeling out of practice.  As I started to gather the necessary items together to make myself wedding-guest ready, I thought sharing a few of my make-up favorites might make getting ready a bit easier for you.

This is by no means everything that I use to get ready, but it is a few of must have items.

The POREfessional by Benefit is my absolute favorite primer.  It helps keep make-up in place for hours.  Make Up For Ever's HD powder is the best for finishing any look.  It keeps you photo-ready at all times, and this pressed powder easily slides into any purse I'm carrying for touch ups.

My trusty Mac 217 brush blends out any eye look and my go-to fragrance at the moment is Nest Midnight Fleur.  I'm obsessed.

I am absolute in love with Laura Mercier's Silk Creme Foundation.  It gives full coverage, while still looking natural.  NARS Creamy Radiant Concealer hides any dark circles or spots I might be dealing with and also works really well as a highlighter.

I didn't think buying non-drug store mascara mattered until I met Tarte's Lights Camera Lashes.  Now I'm converted and won't go back.  I love how full and long this makes my lashes look.  L'Oreal's Infallible Pro-Spray & Set keeps my makeup in place for HOURS.  It's the best!

Make-up favorites would not be complete with a cute bag to store it all in!  I'm loving my Stella & Dot Beauty Bag for summer.  The colors and the pineapple print are too cute.  And it coordinates with my weekend bag perfectly.

What are your must have make-up items when getting ready for a wedding?

Have a great weekend!
